35 Weeks Update

I'm 35 weeks pregnant with our little Mackenzie Louise (we're like 99% sure that's what we're going to name her. I just can't bring myself to actually write it in her baby book though, it just seems so permanent and I'm having commitment issues). For a while there, this pregnancy really seemed to be dragging on, but now it is suddenly right around the corner. 35 short days until our due date! I had an appointment last Friday morning, where I told the doctor that I'd been having a lot of Braxton Hick contractions. She said that after the 34 week mark, they won't do anything to stop labor - which was both exciting and terrifying to hear. Let's all cross our fingers that I don't go into labor for at least a few more weeks! I still have 2 weeks of work, a long to-do list, and a soon-to-be 3 year old's birthday to celebrate. So basically, I'd love for her to come after April 23, around the 38 1/2 week mark :) Got that, baby? Great!

I really love a good excel file, as well as a to-do list, so a few weeks back, I put together a week-by-week checklist of all the things I'd like to get done before baby comes. Before the list, I felt so overwhelmed by all of the ideas swimming around in my mind. I couldn't figure out how to prioritize either, so basically I was just worrying a lot but not actually getting anything done. I haven't stuck to the plan perfectly, but it feels so good to have all of my thoughts written down and prioritized. Knowing that I only have 5 or 6 tasks to do each week and that every task has an assigned "due date" gives me a lot of peace. Upcoming this week: finish making a "big sister" busy bag for Maddie, clean all of our baby gear that has been in storage, and order a new breast pump.

A couple weeks ago, Maddie went to my parents' house for the entire weekend, and it was glorious. I love the girl more than anything, but the peace and quiet was so nice. I was able to tackle so many things on my to-do list without a little "helper" tagging along. Tom and I even went out for a date night! It's likely the last one we'll have for... a while... so we enjoyed it! Before we left, I convinced Tom to recreate the maternity photos we took when I was pregnant with Maddie. The Maddie pictures were taken on March 22, 2013 at 35 weeks pregnant, and the recent pictures were taken on March 18, 2017 at 33 weeks pregnant. Same dress, same camera, same field at the end of our street. We were just in time too to recreate them in the same place because a new neighborhood is going into that field this summer.

I am really committed to pursuing a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) with this baby, so I'm doing all sorts of hippie things to prepare for labor. I'm drinking raspberry leaf tea, eating so many dates, and taking evening primrose oil. I'm also walking a lot and doing plenty of stretching/yoga poses. We've even hired a doula to help during labor and I'm feeling so at ease knowing she'll be there for support. Are you happy, Austin? Look what you've done to me, turning me crunchy! ;) We also took a VBAC class at a local hospital. I feel really confident in my decision, and in my body, to take on this challenge. I am a major wuss when it comes to pain, but I feel like I'm so much better prepared for labor, physically and mentally, this time around.

I'm already done with the nursery, because it was really easy. Basically exactly the same as it was with Maddie. I just updated the name banner and put up a personalized print. For now, we have our guest bed in the nursery and the crib in our bedroom, since she'll sleep with us to start anyway, and we'll have a spot for grandmas to stay when they come help. The name banner looks a little silly without the tall crib underneath it, so just use your imagination. Easy peasy, done done done :)

And that's all I can think of! Did I miss any important details? Pregnancy brain in full effect these days.

A Creative Space

I am SO excited about our reimagined upstairs loft space, I just have to share it!

When we first moved in, nearly 4 years ago (!?!), we built a neat custom desk for the loft. It was practical for a while - big enough for both Tom and I to have our computers set up at, along with the printer and router/modem. But we didn't really take into consideration just how close the desk was to the kids rooms, and how loud/bright it would be to work there after Maddie went to bed. So eventually Tom started working downstairs at the dining room table. Then we inherited an awesome antique desk from Tom's family, that weighed about 800 pounds too many to carry up the stairs, so we put it in our great room. It's a little unconventional to have the desk right by the front door, but functionally, it's perfect. Anyway, back to the loft, so the desk we built up there just became a spot to accumulate clutter and was rarely used. We talked about making the space into a "play room" but we already have toys downstairs and in Maddie's room. I just couldn't bear the thought of another messy toy zone. Then my mom gave us the best idea - an arts and crafts space!

Our old desk - I can't seem to find a single picture of the finished product (stained and decorated), argh.

So I ran with it. I brainstormed and Tom assembled. The brains and the brawn, per usual, when it comes to house projects around here. We set it up as a creative space for both Maddie and I to use. (Tom gets the garage for all his tools and projects, so it's fair right? I think he's so glad to see the loft being used that he doesn't feel too jipped on the deal.)

We shortened the desk to one wall where I put our printer and my Silhouette Cameo. We were able to keep the Craigslist filing cabinets, which I love, and we picked up a super cheap IKEA Snille desk chair that is surprisingly comfortable in my opinion.

On the long wall, we used IKEA's Trofast shelf system for all of Maddie's art supplies down low, and mine up high. Then we hung an IKEA Dignitet wire to display her art, and IKEA Fintorp buckets for crayons, markers, pencils, etc. I had fun labeling all of the storage using my Cameo! The little table is also from IKEA and the rug is from Wal-Mart.

I LOVE the way it turned out! Not to mention, we've been having so much fun up there! So far, Maddie has been well-behaved with her art supplies and is content to color/paint/glue while I get ready or put away laundry. We used to do our art projects at the kitchen table, but having a designated space upstairs and out of sight means we don't have to clean up after every project! Lazy mom win!

Now, if I could just an extra 3 hours in my day to craft, we'd really be all set :)

What’s New in the New Year

It’s been a while since I blogged, huh?  Aaaand, I really haven’t written a single thing about this pregnancy, which I’m already more than half-way through.  So I suppose this will be another catch-up post that’s more for me than for you, because I love to come back and read these later. I know that a year from now I’ll really be laughing at how simple things were with just one kid and how I had no real appreciation for that fact.

So let me start with a quick recap of 2016, then a little about what’s coming up for our family in 2017, and wrap up with some fun facts about baby #2.

2016 was a great year for us.  It was fairly uneventful, but full of good times.  18 months – 24 months was my favorite age with Maddie, so the first half of the year was just so fun watching her vocabulary grow and personality shine.  We played with friends, enjoyed the outdoors, attended library storytimes and music classes.  Maddie and I traveled to Pittsburgh on a fun little trip visit my friend Katie.  Then Maddie turned 2 and we had a fun lemonade themed birthday party.  Tom & I enjoyed an anniversary weekend on South Congress, then we all made a last minute trip to Port Aransas in June for a fun weekend on the beach.  Maddie started dance classes and went swimming a lot over the summer.   In the fall, we celebrated a new pregnancy and we were so excited to find out it’s another girl.  Maddie had a blast dressed up as a clown for Halloween!  Then in December we took our first trip to Disney World and had the. best. time!  Our holidays were filled with friends, family, food, and fun.  Maddie loved Santa and all of her gifts.  I mean really, 2016 was just wonderful for us.  I know we’ll always look back on this year fondly.

And now I still can’t believe it’s 2017.  Every year seems to go faster than the last.  I’m certain 2017 will be a real whirlwind of a year too.

Maddie just started a T/Th morning preschool program near our house.  We decided to enroll her for several reasons.  First off, we thought it would be nice for me and baby #2 to have some quiet time together without a tornado toddler around.  But we also know that having a new little sister will be a big change for Maddie, so we wanted to start her preschool program early enough that she has time to get acclimated there and it will already be part of her routine. Second, we also felt that Maddie would really LOVE going to preschool.  She is always super eager to learn and she has been talking about kindergarten all the time (a new elementary school was just built a few blocks from our house).  And third, let’s be real, Mommy needs a break.  I know I’ve complained about it before, but two is a hard age.  Maddie has started to push boundaries and intentionally break rules.  I know it’s a normal and natural part of her development, but it is dang exhausting and patience-testing for me.  Yes yes, I know, I left my job so that I could spend more time with Maddie.  And I still 100% love my decision and the time I spend with her, but maybe I need more of a happy medium.  They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, and I’m certain that having just a few hours apart from each other each week will be good for both of us.

So what am I going to do while she’s at school?  Grocery shop, run errands, clean the house.  Catch up on continuing education credits to maintain my CPA license.  Play with my new Silhouette Cameo ;)  JK, but really, I want to get all of my “chores” done while Maddie is away because I can get them done twice as fast without her “help” and then I can truly devote my attention to her when we’re together.  Often times while we’re playing together (coloring, doing a puzzle, having a pretend picnic with her animals), I find that my mind is off in 100 other places thinking about everything I need to get done and all the other things I “should” be doing.  I have a hard time compartmentalizing my time and tasks.  Maddie used to nap consistently for 2 hours every afternoon and that’s when I tackled my to-do list.  But now I’m lucky if she naps for an hour and it’s a struggle to get her to sleep almost every day.  Plus, ummm, I may or may not be napping with her.  Being pregnant and keeping up with a toddler is exhausting!  Anyway, point being, my hope is that my busy mind will be more at ease when we’re together.

Also, there is a good chance that I will also going back to work very part-time for a couple months this spring during busy season.  The details are still being sorted, but I’m hopeful this opportunity will pan out.  More to come :)

[Update since I started drafting this a few days ago… Maddie’s first two days of preschool were ROUGH.  The first day, she cried because she wanted to go outside, then when it was time to go outside she cried because she wanted to go back inside.  I suppose it might take a little while for her to get used to a strict schedule.  It’s not like we give in to her every request at home, but generally when it comes to something like asking to go outside (or go back inside), it’s easy to accommodate.  On day two, her teacher said she cried most of the morning because she “wanted her mommy to come back”.  When I asked Maddie how her day was, she said "I was sad."  And when I asked why she was sad, she said, "I missed Mommy."  I asked if her teachers gave her a hug when she was sad, and she said yes.  I asked if she got to sit with her teacher and she said, "No, I just be standing by the door waiting for Mommy." :( :( :(  It was hard to hear.  I prodded and asked about everything they did all morning... "Did you have fun at the playground?"  "No, I didn't want to play. I was sad."  "Did you like music class?"  "I be just a little bit sad in music class."  I know it's just a phase, but man oh man, I hope it passes quickly.  She did at least tell me that she was a good listener when they went outside and that she will "maybe be happy next time"]

Not a whole lot new with Tom these days.  He’s been with Maxwell Locke & Ritter for a year and a half now, and still enjoying it.  He works a few hundred (yes, hundred) less hours a year and that has been amazing for all of us.  Family stress level is down several notches!  Busy season is still busy season and it will forever have long hours for as long as he’s in public accounting (and he plans to stay for the long haul), but at least it is much more flexible now.  He comes home for dinner most nights and logs back on after bedtime if he needs to.  We definitely need baby #2 to hang tight until at least April 15th though!

Other than having a baby, we don’t have many other big plans for 2017.  That’s probably enough though, right?  No trips or vacations planned.  No moves or career changes.  Our main goal for the year is just survival ;)

Alright, so on to baby #2.  To be really honest, it feels weird to call her #2.  Because, she’s actually #3.  We just never got to meet #2.  But it also seems weird to call her #3 and then explain every time that we only have one living child, and one lost to an early miscarriage.  I struggled with it a lot in the beginning when other people referred to her as #2.  Obviously they meant no harm by it of course, but the pain of the miscarriage was still heavy on my heart and every time I saw that “#2” it felt like another reminder of the loss rather than a celebration of the new baby.  Time has helped to heal and I’m not as bothered by calling her #2 now – if anything just because it’s the easiest thing to do.  Ideally we would have a name for her, and then I could simply call her by her name.  But we’re struggling with the name game this time around.  Got any ideas for us?  I’m all ears!

This pregnancy has been different from my pregnancy with Maddie.  This time around, I was nauseous pretty much 24/7 from weeks 5 to 14.  I didn’t have any food cravings – just aversions.  Nothing sounded good to eat and grocery shopping was especially awful – all those food smells in the grocery store, ugh!   Also, my bump started to show much earlier and this baby is sitting much lower down than Maddie did (thanks stretched out muscles that I never worked to tone).  My belly button has already popped out this time around but it never did with Maddie.  And my skin complexion has been terrible this time but with Maddie it was clearer!  Interesting how pregnancies can be so different.  I’ve also already started having Braxton Hicks contractions and that is pretty terrifying.  I don’t recall ever having them with Maddie, but it’s also possible that I just didn’t recognize them.

I took weekly bump photos when I was pregnant with Maddie and I journaled every week about my pregnancy and how we were getting everything ready for her.  I kept a separate planner for all of my appointments with notes and questions for my doctor.  This time, I’m doing monthly photos (hey, better than nothing!) and I’ve written down absolutely nothing.  Nothing.  It makes me a little sad to write that and I wish I’d done a better job.  I wasn’t going to make any New Years resolutions this year, but maybe I’ll commit to documenting this pregnancy better.  Now seems like a good time to start ;)

How far along:  23 weeks

Due date:  May 5 (which means that yesterday we were exactly 4 months out.  When I think about how much our family and day-to-day life will change, it seems so soon.  But when I think about being pregnant for another 4 months, it seems like an eternity!)

Size of baby:  A papaya (roughly 11 inches long and just over 1 lb)

Total weight gain:  14 lbs  (which is actually exactly how much I’d gained at this point with Maddie, I went back and checked. I also noted that I gained a whopping 35lbs in total with Maddie and that is WAY more than I remember. Yikes!)

Symptoms:  Knock on wood… none right now (other than being super hungry all the time).  My 2nd trimester has really been a breeze.  Last time I had a lot of back pain that started around this point, but fortunately I haven’t seen any signs of it this go around.  Maybe spending my days being active instead of sitting at a desk is making a difference.

Cravings:  Just like last time, and all the time really, I’ll forever have a sweet tooth (several sweet teeth?)  Soups also sound good to me all the time.

Sleep:  Pretty good.  Occasional insomnia.

Movement:  Lots of movement, and it can now be felt from the outside as well.  Tom and Maddie have both felt baby sister kick!

Gender:  It’s another girl!  We found out at 13 weeks via a genetic blood test, and confirmed at our 19 week ultrasound.

Name:  “Baby Sister” for now.  We’ve been narrowing down our list of names, but none are really jumping out at us as “the one”.  Some of our favorites are Mollie, Mackenzie, Abigail, and Mabrie.  Mollie is my favorite, Mackenzie was on both of our lists and was a backup for Maddie’s name, and Abigail is Tom’s favorite.  I tried really hard to convince Tom on Maxine, but he’s not having it, so I traded Maxine for Mabrie.  I’m pretty sure he hates it too but not as much as Maxine so it seemed like a good plan to him.  I’m also trying to convince him on Louise as a middle name.  My great grandmother (Maddie & Baby Sister’s great great grandmother) just passed away this year at 95 years old and her name was Louise.  I think she would be a wonderful namesake.  I mean really, Mollie Louise Cooper – isn’t it just aesthetically pleasing??

Style:  Maternity clothes and stretchy/comfy clothes (athleisure?).  Last time around I hated full-panel pants because they seemed so restricting.  But this time, I’m loving them because I feel like they give my belly more support.

Nursery:  Oh sweet Baby Sister, you get your big sister’s nursery.  And we’re really not making any changes to it.  I’ll swap out Maddie’s name above the crib and that’s about all :)  And so begins this baby’s struggle of being the second kid.

Well, as usual, this post was sufficiently longer than I’d planned for it to be.  One of these days I’ll get it together and blog regularly.  Ha, who am I kidding?  Talk to you guys again in 2018 ;)

To my daughters, after the election:

Over the past couple of weeks, I had envisioned this letter to be different than it will be now. You are too little to understand the magnitude of yesterday's presidential election, but as it turns out, maybe that is for the best. I really wanted to tell you how excited I am that the only world you'll ever know is one where a woman can be president. While that isn't the case now, most of what I wanted to tell you will still hold true.

I want you to know that I voted for the first ever female candidate to be nominated for president by a major U.S. political party. And it was such an amazing feeling. I did it for you, and I did it for me, and I did it for every woman who has fought for equality. Now, of course I didn't vote for Hillary solely on the basis that she is a woman. In fact, I did not vote for her in the primaries. I voted for her in the election because I agree with so many of her ideals, including equality, unity, inclusion, and compassion. Her opponent on the other hand had quite a different platform. In my opinion, he is rude, vulgar, vile, and arrogant. His personality is, essentially, the exact opposite of your dear mother's. I am appalled that someone with his (lack of) experience and troubled track record would even be considered for office, and I struggle to understand how he landed there in the first place. But that is not the point of this letter. Donald Trump was chosen as the 45th President of the United States, and I really do wish him the best. I sincerely hope he will be a great leader for our country over the next four years.

I had wanted to tell you that the greatest glass ceiling in the United States has been broken. But unfortunately, it hasn't been -- yet. So instead, I'll tell you that it will be one day; I'm confident in that. And maybe now you'll be old enough to really see it happen. Maybe you'll even get to vote! And still, there were other glass ceilings shattered in this election and in the past decades. Hillary and so many other great women are paving the way for girls in your generation and women in mine to do incredible things.

Because, my girls, you really can do anything. You can climb ladders, you can break glass ceilings, and you can move mountains - if you want to. Your achievements don't have to be grandiose. You can quietly impact those around you and in your community in a positive way. You can make a difference in the lives of others near or far. You can promote inclusion, kindness, empathy, fairness, and love. You can be good friends, good neighbors, good people. I know you will. You can devote yourself to motherhood or to a fabulous career or to an important cause. You can do it all. Of course it won't be easy; it won't be without hard work and sacrifice. You will have opponents and there will be obstacles in your path. But the pride you'll feel when you achieve your dreams will be so worth it.

And most importantly, I want you to know that whatever you choose to be or to do, I'll be right there beside you. I'll support you in every way I know how. I wanted to tell you today that a woman has been chosen for president and to express my pride in that event. But instead, I'll tell you now that maybe YOU can be the first ever woman president. Reach for the stars, they'll be within reach.

Love always,
Mom

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Image result for domestic violence awareness month 2016 profile picture

This is a little outside my usual lighthearted mom-life postings, but October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, so I'm going to share something a bit more serious.

Studies show that in the United States, more than 1 in 4 women will be a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime. Think of all the women you know... 27% of them have likely been abused or will be abused by someone they love(d). Isn't that terrifying? Maybe you're thinking... No, not the women I know. The women in my life are smart, strong, educated, and well above the poverty line. That only happens in other places, not in my circle.

Unfortunately, that's probably not the case. Domestic violence happens across many demographics. If could happen to someone you love. It could happen to you. It happened to me.

Me. Me, with a college education, a loving family, and close friends. Me, who is fully capable of making good decisions, but chose to date someone with a hot temper and substance abuse issues.

________________________________________________________________________________________

It was a Friday night like any other. He was visiting me from out of town with his dog. Our neighbors invited us over, and after 10 too many rounds of beer pong, I knew I needed to get home and into bed. I pulled an Irish exit (sometimes also called a "Radford") and slipped out undetected. When I got back to my house, I found that my boyfriend's dog had chewed up the bathroom tile and door in our rental house. I was furious, but my boyfriend's attitude was, well nothing we can do about it tonight, let's get back to having fun! He continued to party on while I stewed and stressed about how I would find a way to afford repairs to the bathroom. I crawled into bed and sent a few messages back and forth with an old friend, an old boyfriend to be more specific. We'd kept in touch, and truth be told, I took advantage of the relationship, only using his friendship when it benefited me. He offered to help pay for repairs or whatever I needed, assuring me it would be fine. I was angry, I was alone, and I was intoxicated. Texting an old boyfriend late at night wasn't a good decision, I know. That's the type of dysfunctional relationship I was in... we both did things that shouldn't be done in a healthy, committed relationship.

A short time later, my boyfriend came back over, saw me on my phone, pulled it away and saw who I was texting. In a fury of rants and belligerent yelling, he grabbed me by the arm and yanked me out of bed onto the floor. I screamed and cried out, apologizing, and calling out for my roommates. He left the house in a rage, tearing things off walls as he ran out. His tires screeched as he drove away, but he returned only minutes later. I was terrified when I heard him stomping through the house again. I hid in my bedroom closet under a pile of dirty clothes while he stormed around yelling obscenities and calling me names. I was quiet as a mouse through muffled tears and thank God, he didn't find me. He left the house again, brakes squealing.

By now it was really late, middle of night late, and I was a terrified wreck. My roommate and I went over to our neighbors house to try and hide out in case he came back again, but they were fast asleep and not answering calls. I phoned another friend who drove over immediately and stayed the rest of the night to give us comfort. While we waited, I called my dad. Blubbering and slurring, telling him something about a bruised arm and torn linoleum. I can imagine he probably didn't sleep a wink the rest of the night... I'm sorry, Dad.

When the sun came up the next day, a purple hand print wrapped its way around my forearm. My eyes were red and puffy, and my ego also bruised. Who knows what would have happened had he found me in that closet. I shudder to even think about it.

I didn't talk to him for days, ignoring all calls and messages. But then a letter came in the mail, and l read it. It was a heartfelt apology about mistakes and forgiveness and quitting drinking and blah blah blah. I kept my distance for a couple months, but the apologies kept coming, and one day I found myself driving an hour and a half to see him again. Me, fully capable of making smart decisions, making a terrible decision. This wasn't even the first time he had made a mistake that older, wiser, me would deem an infinite deal-breaker. He cheated on me just a couple months into our relationship. Now he had a much worse offense on his record, and I went back to him. Me, with the college education, the loving family, and close friends. Me, the 1 in 4 statistic.

So, what can you do? How can you prevent domestic violence?

To start, tell the women and girls you know how special they are, how valued they are, and how much you care about them. Tell them they deserve the absolute best and you won't watch them settle for less. Although slightly less common, domestic violence happens to men as well. It happens in both homosexual and heterosexual relationships. So while you're at it, make sure the guys in your life hear the same message.

Model healthy relationships for your children. Encourage open communication, demonstrate anger management skills, and promote respect.

If something seems "off" with a friend, co-worker or loved one, inquire! Of course it could be a myriad of things, but maybe they just need someone to open the door to a conversation. Be there to listen without judgement.

Do you get a bad vibe from someone's significant other? Have you witnessed possible indicators of abuse (unpredictable mood swings, jealousy, explosive behavior, controlling behavior, isolation from family/friends, substance abuse)? Or even witnessed actual domestic abuse? As hard as it may be, speak up. Let the victim know you are there for them and you really do have their best interest at heart. Make sure they have your cell phone number and let them know you're always available.

If you do in fact learn of someone who is in an abusive relationship, there are tons and tons of resources out there to help you help them. The National Domestic Violence Hotline would be a great place to start.

And lastly, help spread awareness. Let others know you are against domestic violence and that you will be an advocate for victims.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go squeeze my little girl and remind her that she is incredible, beautiful, smart, talented, and loved more than anything else in this world. When she's older, I'll tell her that anyone worthy of her love will see her exactly the same way and will treat her with the utmost respect because she absolutely 100% deserves it.

And P.S. in case it isn't glaringly obvious, my husband is NOT the boyfriend in my story. My husband is exactly the opposite and he treats me with so much love and respect. I count my blessings every day that I married such an amazing husband and father.

It was the Summer of '16

It doesn't really have the same ring as "summer of 69", I know. But did you know that song isn't actually about the year 1969? I read that somewhere. Bryan Adams was like 8 years old in 1969.

Anyway, this is basically just going to be an update on life lately and what we've been up to this summer since I haven't blogged in a while. I know that summer didn't technically start until mid-June, but in my mind it starts in mid-May. I blame the Texas heat for my confusion!

We kicked off the summer with a second round of Whole30. We didn't do an awesome job, but I'd say we stuck to it about 90% of the time. And that's better than nothin'! My biggest takeaways from this round were:
  1. To stop snacking!! Or at least to stop junk-snacking. Sweets will forever be my downfall, and I'm guilty on more than one occasion of sneaking way way way too many Oreos as soon as I come downstairs from putting Maddie down for her nap.
  2. If it isn't in the pantry, I can't eat it. And since I do the grocery shopping, I'm in control here! Just skip right over the cookie aisle.
  3. Smoked paprika. Random, I know. But have you ever used this spice?? I love foods with a smoky flavor so I could (and do actually) put this on anything!
  4. Here are links to our favorite recipe from this round: taco bowls, these incredible grain-free banana muffins (which are technically not Whole30 compliant even though all the ingredients are approved), and the spice rub in this Grilled Chicken recipe (I didn't make the Chimichurri sauce because I'm lazy)
Enjoy these iPhone photos of poorly staged lunch plates, because food blogger I am not.

Shortly before we ended Whole30, we watched a couple documentaries about being vegan. So in a complete change of direction, I started adding several vegan dinners to our weekly meal plan. I dropped about 7lbs over the summer with essentially no change to my [complete lack of] exercise. It's amazing what clean eating can do!

Tom and I also celebrated our 4th anniversary in May and had a great time on South Congress. I wrote about it here!

We spent Memorial Day weekend bouncing around from our house to the lake house to my parents house. Maddie enjoyed kayaking, swimming, sweets, and sparklers!

In June, we headed down to Port Aransas for a quick summer vacation. We stayed at a cute little place called Seashell Village and enjoyed the pools there. Maddie loved the beach the first day and despised it the next two days. Yay, toddlers!

When we got back from our vacation, we tackled potty training with Maddie. But actually, "tackled" isn't the right word to use because it was basically the easiest thing ever. It required some patience those first few days of 800 trips to the bathroom, but she picked it up so quickly. She was really motivated by the M&Ms... like mother, like daughter. Several months later, she still occasionally asks for an M&M after a bathroom break.

We spent the 4th of July bouncing around again like we did on Memorial Day. It's my favorite holiday of the year, and it didn't disappoint!

Later in July, after many conversations  failed persuasive speeches, I could not convince Tom that we should move into a newer, smaller house with a more practical floor plan in this gorgeous Round Rock neighborhood. I tried my darndest, and I still think my arguments are pretty compelling. But, marriage is about compromise, right? So here we stay. But if we're going to stay, you better believe I started working up a nice honey-do list for my dearest Tom Tom! [Can you hear my evil laugh?]

First, we tackled the downstairs half bath. The previous owner painted it a deep red color that made the already tiny bathroom seem even smaller. We repainted it tan and added crown molding to fancy it up. It seems so much bigger and brighter!

Next, I had Tom cut and install these faux floating shelves in our upstairs toilet closet. I did stain them myself, so I am at least a tiny bit useful ;) The decorations are a work in progress. I've already killed a succulent and I'm looking for a bigger apothecary jar for the cotton balls.

Then, we picked up some furniture from Tom's parents because they sold their home to downsize. We mentally rearranged the front living room wasted space room approximately 50 times and finally decided we just couldn't fit all the furniture. So we swapped out our armoire-turned-bar and replaced it with our new (to us) desk. Isn't it neat!? It was Tom's great grandfather's desk, made in the early 1900s. Tom has been working downstairs at the desk in the evenings after Maddie goes to sleep and its much better for him than the upstairs loft because he doesn't have to worry about being so quiet next to Maddie's room. Also, I'm planning to paint the trim on that mirror and hang it above the desk :)

We also started rearranging the guest bedroom because our current project is a "big girl" room for Maddie. We got this neat little antique vanity and dresser that I'm super excited about it. Also, I ordered this comforter from Target and I'm OBSESSED. I made these paper flowers and hung them above her new big girl bed. I may or may not be living vicariously through my 2 year old.

Then we built these neat little cubbies in her closet for some extra storage space!

Labor Day weekend was another fun one where we spent time with family!

And for an update on Maddie, she is absolutely, so very "2" right now. Terrific twos and terrible twos all at once. But if you ask her, she'll probably tell you that she's "2 and a half"! Her vocabulary and grammar are increasing so rapidly which is awesome, but she has an opinion on everything and now she has the words to voice it! We talk daily about improving her "listening skills" because she completely ignores us a lot of the time and wants to do everything at her own pace... which is never really quick enough to get anywhere on time. She's relatively well behaved and generally pretty sweet, but she tests my patience daily. What seems to be working pretty well, is when I get really frustrated, I just walk away. Maddie will sense that I'm upset and most times immediately do whatever it is I asked her to do. It works so much better than when I lose my temper and get grumpy. Live and learn!

Other summer highlights include but are not limited to: lots and lots of pool time, splash pads, live music, play dates, library story times, arts & crafts, so much ice cream, celebrating National Donut Day, a Home Depot workshop for Maddie, the end of music classes, the start of dance classes, Bubblepalooza, movie nights, a trip to the circus, and lots of family time.

And for another little side note, I initially drafted this post over a month ago. That night, I spilled a bottle of Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy beer all over myself and the couch (because clumsy is my middle name), so I had to remove the covers from all of the cushions (and my sweatpants) at 11pm. It was too late to take a shower (yes, that's how much I spilled on myself) because our hot water heater thumps really loud and its above Maddie's room (that's a complaint for another day)... so I found some baby wipes in the downstairs bathroom and thought to myself, welp, guess this will have to do for tonight. Cheers!

And now, happy first day of fall!
